Term time is the wrong time for problems.
The calendar is immovable: term-time intensity, holiday change windows, enrolment season. When systems fail in week 3 of term, teaching stops and parents notice. And your staff are teachers first, system users second, so technology has to carry them rather than test them.

The ten Child Safe Standards have applied to Queensland non-state schools since 1 January 2026, on top of NSSAB accreditation, written student-protection processes and Blue Card risk management. For a school, proving safety and compliance is not a client requirement: it is accreditation, regulation and parent trust. NSSAB expects written student-protection processes under ongoing review, the Child Safe Standards are in force now, and early learning services carry assessment and rating. The technology part of that evidence, who accessed what, which records exist, how incidents were logged, is our department: we keep those systems solid and their records recoverable. On cybersecurity, we take schools through the recognised frameworks, Essential Eight and SMB1001 among them, because a structured framework is the fastest route to real capability and the easiest thing to show a board. The obligations themselves stay where they belong, with the school.

What IT does an independent school need?
An independent school’s IT needs are set by three facts: the users include children, the community includes parents, and the calendar is immovable. That means safeguarding-grade cybersecurity and identity, networks that separate staff, student and guest traffic, dependable systems behind the school management platform and portals, and support that plans around terms. Early learning services add assessment-and-rating evidence to the list.
How do the Child Safe Standards involve technology?
Several of the ten Child Safe Standards touch technology directly: safe online environments, record keeping, complaint handling and information sharing. The practical step is mapping where each standard’s evidence lives, visitor logs, access records, incident workflows, and making sure those systems are dependable and their records retrievable. The policies belong to the school; the systems that evidence them are an IT responsibility.
Is TASS supported by outside IT providers?
Yes. TASS, like other school management systems, is usually supported in partnership: the vendor looks after the application, and the school’s IT provider keeps everything around it healthy: hosting or servers, integrations, identity, backups, and the network the whole campus reaches it through. Most day-to-day problems live in those surrounding layers, which is why the pairing matters.
How do schools keep student BYOD networks safe?
By separation and identity: student, staff and guest traffic on their own networks, filtered appropriately for age, with device identity deciding what each connection can reach. Done properly, a student device reaches what learning requires and nothing else, and the school can show its duty-of-care settings whenever it is asked.
