In the very (very) beginning.
Ben Love’s entrepreneurial ways started early. Lemonade stand. Selling coconut soap. Getting his mum to buy packs of socks and selling off individual pairs at school (unbeknownst to her!).
He also had a passion for computers and technology, and finally achieved a lifelong goal at 10 years old when he was (finally) allowed to have his first Commodore 64 computer. It was only a matter of time before those passions, combined with life experience and skills learned in various careers along the way, culminated in Grassroots IT.
But it’s not just all about Ben.
Once upon a time, Ben met Annie and, after she lovingly
stalked him demonstrated her resilience and commitment (honestly, that’s a whole other story), they were married in 2003.
After time spent working in the Whitsundays and backpacking overseas, and having many conversations about life dreams along the way, Ben and Annie returned to Brisbane knowing that it was time for them to launch their own business. Armed with a business name, a logo, and a shared vision for the business they wanted to create, they began Grassroots IT in Annie’s parent’s garage.
And so Grassroots IT was born.
From the garage setup, they upgraded to working from the three bedroom unit they were renting, and it wasn’t unusual to find Ben and Annie sending messages to each other at 9pm at night whilst on computers in different areas of the house. They learned many lessons about the joys and pitfalls of living and working with a spouse.
Grassroots IT’s first official office premises was a cottage-style corner store in Gordon Park, and soon after moving in, they recruited the first official employee as a technician.
The small business journey.
As any business owner would understand, the Grassroots IT journey has not been without challenges, especially as Ben and Annie juggle a young family of three boys at the same time. The work team has grown and changed, there have been office moves, we've had to make hard decisions and we've celebrated achievements and milestones along the way.
The world has changed a lot since 2005. So has technology, and so have we. These days, we have an awesome, ever-growing team based in a lovely office at Wilston Village, in Brisbane’s inner north, as well as offices in New Zealand and the Philippines. And with each day, we learn and grow and search for the best possible ways to support our clients, their businesses and their teams.
And we will continue to grow and learn.
Over the past decade, Grassroots IT has evolved in many ways, but our mission – to deliver solutions that drive change – and our commitment to our community of clients and team members has remained constant. We truly believe in the transformative power of businesses, so we will continue to deliver solutions that drive change and help businesses make positive changes in the world.
We can't wait to see what the next decade brings.
